THE SECRET IS OUT

The Peoria Ski Club was founded in 1959 under the name "Smubiks of Peoria." If you wonder what "Smubiks" means, just read the name backwards and all will be made clear. Later, our name was changed to Peoria Ski Club, but we retained the term "Smubiks" as the name of our monthly newsletter. Membership hit its peak in the 70's at over 1000 members. At the time, the Peoria Ski Club was as popular for its social activities as it was for its ski trips. Today we have a membership of about 100 (Single and Family). The typical ages of our members are between 25 and 90. 

 

The secret is out – we don’t just downhill ski!

 

Monthly we usually meet at local establishments for a “Happy Hour,” which is usually more like dinner with conversation and optional libations.  

Seasonally we meet up for camping, hiking and cycling locally or sometimes venture a bit farther in our region.  Warmer weather also brings gatherings for Golf Outings (including Miniature), Swimming, Canoeing/Rafting/Kayaking, Picnics, etc.  It is not uncommon for the club to participate in a Curling Event in Triumph, IL, that the Ski Kouncil of Illinois Clubs hosts most winters. Members have been known to volunteer their homes and yards for House parties (themes include Super Bowl, Wine and Cheese, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.)

 

Don’t see your favorite activity – bring it up and chances are there will be people willing to try it!

 

Our big parties are the Sign up meeting usually held in early August, our holiday party in early December, and our Post Season Dinner party to relive all our exciting adventures on and off the slopes in the past ski season.
